Andy served under the command of Major Lloyd Comer, who is now SafeLane Global’s Operational Support Manager.

When serving in Afghanistan with the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, Andy took part in a patrol in Kajaki, Helmand. A series of explosions alerted him that he and his patrol had walked into an unmarked minefield.

Andy risked his life to assist his critically wounded comrades, volunteering to repeatedly cross the minefield to help - before he too set off a landmine and lost his foot.

Bizsu, a beautiful and energetic Vizsla, is one of the best detection dogs ever to attend SafeLane Global’s South African training facility. She aced every challenge and was destined to deploy to save lives.

Sadly, in 2018 she began to develop serious health issues and was diagnosed with canine discoid lupus erythematosus.

Because of her complex health problems, Bizsu requires specialist medical and nutritional support and cannot be deployed or rehomed.

SafeLane Global is proud to sponsor and support Bizsu in her new career, working with a drugs education charity in South Africa.

As a friendly, non-threatening dog, by day Bizsu works alongside her human handlers and drug education specialists in schools to detect, remove and teach children and young adults about the dangers of narcotics. By night Bizsu can be found curled up at the feet of SafeLane Global’s Manager of Canine Services, Talitha Estebeth.

Central to SafeLane Global’s approach is the integration of host-country nationals into operations.

Already qualified local nationals are recruited to support operations in roles as diverse as chefs or canine handlers for example, and additional host-country citizens are recruited to receive full training from skilled project management staff.

This allows SafeLane Global to widen the pool of highly trained people the community in which they’re working can rely upon, and it gives local nationals valuable opportunities to learn new skills and earn a fair salary.

From the board to its bid winning writers, from operations managers to management accountants, and from de-miners to dog trainers, SafeLane Global employs women and men in equal roles for equal pay. There is no glass ceiling!

As part of its commitment to gender equality, it maintains appropriate anti-discrimination standard operating procedures, and actively ensures it recruits female local nationals when deployed to a host country.

In some international settings, SafeLane Global acknowledges certain pre-existing disadvantages, (such as lower literacy and education rates for women than for men), might have to be compensated with extra training to offer real equal opportunities to men and women.

All training content and materials SafeLane Global uses are therefore suitable to accommodate for any expected range in educational level and previous operational experience of proposed persons of any gender.

Additionally, SafeLane global incorporates gender sensitive language, images and examples into its training content to reinforce its commitment to delivering gender appropriate training.

The first duty of Government is the defence of the realm. Our Armed Forces fulfil that responsibility on behalf of the Government, sacrificing some civilian freedoms, facing danger and, sometimes, suffering serious injury or death as a result of their duty. Families also play a vital role in supporting the operational effectiveness of our Armed Forces. In return, the whole nation has a moral obligation to the members of the Naval Service, the Army and the Royal Air Force, together with their families. They deserve our respect and support, and fair treatment. Those who serve in the Armed Forces, whether Regular or Reserve, those who have served in the past, and their families, should face no disadvantage compared to other citizens in the provision of public and commercial services. Special consideration is appropriate in some cases, especially for those who have given most such as the injured and the bereaved. This obligation involves the whole of society: it includes voluntary and charitable bodies, private organisations, and the actions of individuals in supporting the Armed Forces. Recognising those who have performed military duty unites the country and demonstrates the value of their contribution. This has no greater expression than in upholding this Covenant - which SafeLane Global is proud and honoured to do.
