Ground source heat pump borehole installation

SafeLane installed a ground source heat pump (GSHP) and water borehole for a commercial property, overcoming site access issues and delivering significant savings for the client.

A heat pump supplier contacted SafeLane having secured a project in South Devon.

Their client was renovating and extending a large property, which would become a residential nursing home.

At the time, the introduction of the government’s Renewable Heat Incentive programme made the installation of a ground source heat pump (GSHP) system financially viable.

This provided a good return on investment and offered a saving in running costs when compared to traditional heating systems.

As the site was in a residential setting and had limited grounds, this prevented the use of a trenched heat collector.  There was just enough space for eight 100m deep boreholes to be installed however.

It was agreed that a thermal response test would be conducted once the first borehole was installed, as this would provide live data about the thermal properties of the ground.

This data enabled the design to be amended to seven boreholes due to the high thermal results.  This provided the client with a saving over the original quote. 

They chose to reinvest this saving by also contracting SafeLane to install a water abstraction borehole.

The overall success of the entire project resulted in the client asking us to install a water borehole at another of their properties in the same town.
