During WWII, 1.5 million tonnes of high explosives were dropped on the territory of the Third Reich by British and American forces; 22,580 tonnes of ordnance was released over Hamburg alone. Allied bombs had a failure rate estimated at up to 20%; consequently, up to 300,000 tonnes of unexploded aerial ordnance remained across Germany and Austria after the war. Much of it poses a threat to life and commercial operations to this day.
