What is the UN Global Compact?

The UN Global Compact is the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative.

Its stated goal is to mobilise a worldwide movement of sustainable companies and committed stakeholders.  These must work intelligently and with integrity to create a better world and deliver a future that every child deserves.

Whilst support of the Compact is entirely voluntary, acceptance of a company’s application to be recognised as a member by the UN is based on that company proving its commitment to maintaining a culture of integrity.

SafeLane and the UNGC

SafeLane supports the UN Global Compact, is committed to its ten core principles, and is working to advance each of the sustainable development goals it can.

One example of the company’s commitment to the Compact relates to its active approach to the elimination of gender discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.  From its projects to its HQ, from its regional bases to its field operatives there is zero tolerance for any gender related employment restriction.

This is well-illustrated by the following case study: Positively challenging gender-division of labour assumptions in Somalia: the benefits of being a professional woman working in a male-dominant environment.

Having pledged its commitment to making the UN Global Compact and its principles part of the strategy, culture and day-to-day operations of the entire company, SafeLane is an accepted member.

For over 30 years, SafeLane has created safer spaces for clients and communities across the world, therefore it was a natural step for it to commit to the Compact.

It clears paths through unsafe environments – on land and in water: from mined land in Iraq to the beaches of the Falklands Islands, and from construction sites in Berlin to the Docklands in London.

It breathes new life into unsafe environments, by identifying and protecting against safety and security risks.  It locates, identifies and clears unexploded devices, detects weapons, narcotics and intruders, and protects against the threat of harm.

It positively transforms communities, and the lives of those living and working within them.

SafeLane welcomes the scrutiny of the UN Global Compact, and the powerful framework it has created to ensure members are genuinely making a positive difference and working towards a sustainable future – and a better world for every child.
