Fortunately, Zambia has managed to avoid much of the violence and instability of its neighbours in recent years. With rapid economic growth fuelled by its copper industry and Chinese investment, Zambia has worked hard to eliminate the threat of landmines left from regional conflicts of the 1960s and 1990s.
In 2009 Zambia became the third country in southern Africa to declare that all mined areas are now safe for normal human activity. Nonetheless, authorities note that while all known landmines have been cleared, explosive remnants of war (ERW) may yet be found.
