Staff Spotlight: meet Debbie Carr, SafeLane’s newly promoted International Operations Support Manager.
After working with SafeLane as an Operations Support Executive, Debbie has progressed based on her dedication to the role and is now taking on more responsibility and a new challenge in a managerial capacity. She was also recently rewarded for upholding company values.
For our new Staff Spotlight feature, Marketing Executive Mary caught up with her to discuss her previous experience, why she wanted to work for SafeLane, and what her favourite part of the job is...
How long have you worked at SafeLane and what did you do before?
I’ve been here for about 2 and a half years now. Before working for SafeLane I served 16 years in the army. I was a driver by trade but also spent a lot of time managing stores and accounts. This meant I spent a lot of time managing equipment, performing stock checks, and quality assurance processes…all skills that I use in my role at SafeLane.
After leaving the army I worked as a logistics coordinator for a pallet network. I would organise delivery notes for the drivers and brief them on where they were going each day. This role also involved some customer service, but I definitely prefer working on the logistics side of things.
I then moved on to become an assistant transport manager for a food company.
Why did you decide to apply for a job at SafeLane?
For SafeLane I was directly approached by a recruitment agency. They’d assessed my background and thought it was relevant for the role of Operations Support Executive. I was very interested in the role because the sector in which SafeLane works is really different. It’s not every day you hear about people saving lives by clearing landmines and unexploded ordnance. It just sounded a lot more exciting than transporting food!
What is your favourite experience at SafeLane so far?
So far, the biggest highlight of the job has been the opportunity to travel to a project in Somalia. Travel can be a nice break from the routine - and you learn so much.
I particularly enjoyed going to a country I’d never been to before and meeting the people that I speak to via email and support at distance.
Meeting these colleagues face to face and getting a better appreciation for the environment where they are operating helped improve my working relationships with them.
What is the most interesting thing you’ve learnt working at SafeLane?
A lot of the training given at SafeLane has built on my knowledge from working in the army. My background has given me a rough feel for the environments we operate in which has come in handy too. So, although one interesting thing doesn’t jump out at me, it’s been rewarding to find civilian work that values these insights.
